Parents often assume the first dental visit should wait until a child has a full set of teeth, or until something looks wrong. In reality, earlier is better — and the goal of that first visit has almost nothing to do with treatment.
When to schedule it
The general guideline is by age one, or within six months of the first tooth erupting, whichever comes first. At this age, the appointment is short and low-key: a quick look in the mouth, guidance for parents on cleaning technique and diet, and an introduction to the sounds, smells, and chair of a dental office long before any procedure is needed.
How we make it feel safe
We rely heavily on a tell-show-do approach — explaining what a tool does, showing it up close (often on a finger or a stuffed animal first), and only then using it. Kid-friendly language replaces clinical terms: a “sugar bug counter” instead of an explorer, a “tooth camera” instead of an X-ray sensor. The pace is set by the child, not the clock.
How to prep at home
- Use neutral or positive language — avoid words like “shot,” “pain,” or “hurt,” even to reassure
- Read a picture book about visiting the dentist a few days ahead
- Avoid scheduling around nap time or right before a meal
- Let them bring a comfort item — a small stuffed animal is always welcome
- Skip the bribes and threats; a calm, matter-of-fact tone works better than either
What we're actually looking for
Early visits focus on tooth development, bite alignment, signs of early decay (especially from prolonged bottle or sippy-cup use), and habits like thumb-sucking that can affect jaw growth if they continue too long. We also check in on diet and brushing routines, since those habits are far easier to adjust early than to undo later.
A relaxed first visit sets the tone for every visit after it. Kids who start early with a calm, predictable experience are far less likely to develop dental anxiety as they grow — which might be the single most valuable outcome of that first appointment.
See our pediatric dentistry page for more on how we make every visit comfortable for kids.
